REPORT ON PROJECT FOR MAINSTREAMING CHILD PROTECTION THROUGH CHILD LABOUR FREE ZONES IN GHANA- 1ST DISTRICT WORKSHOP HELD AT ASSIN SOUTH DISTRICT ASSEMBLY

JICA REPORT

Child labour remains a significant issue in Ghana, especially in sectors like agriculture, fishing, mining, and informal urban work although several existing efforts have been put in place to combat this issue. Many children are deprived of education and a safe environment due to economic hardship, limited awareness, and inadequate community protection structures and systems. As part of the efforts to help combat this prevailing child protection concern, JICA (Japan International Cooperation Agency) partnered with MLJE (Ministry of Labour, Job and Employment) to implement a 3-year project focused on eliminating child labour by promoting Child Labour Free Zones (CLFZs) — community-led spaces where no child is involved in child labour and every child has access to education and protection services. The project targets four MMDA, s; Atwima Mponua District, Bibiani- Anhwiaso Bekwai Municipality, Assin South District and Upper Denkyira East Municipality and is set to span over the period February 2024- January 2027.

In light of this, a capacity-building workshop has been organized in the district to enhance the understanding and capabilities of local actors in establishing and sustaining Child Labour Free Zones based on national criteria. It also aimed to foster multi-stakeholder collaboration and to align community-level interventions with the broader MLJE/JICA Child Labour Free Zone Project.
